The long-term rental of a sailboat for a tour of the Atlantic or for a winter season in the Caribbean is an attractive alternative to the traditionnal purchase & resale. By making a long-term rental of a sailboat you save time. Indeed, the purchase of a sailboat is very time-consuming: identification of the sailboat, making contact, visit on board, careful inspection of the sailboat, if necessary, intervention of an expert, evaluation of the value of the sailboat, negotiation with the seller, contract of sale, transfer of funds, legal registration , … Then, you must equip the boat for your trip in the Caribbean: desalinator, solar panels, overhaul of life raft and safety equipment, .. .
At the same time, with a long-term yacht charter, you avoid the constraints of reselling your boat at the end of your Caribbean trip. The resale of a sailboat is also very time-consuming: communication for the sale, management of contacts, visits of potential buyers, … Of course you have the possibility to go through a broker or a reseller but this service is not free! In addition, since it is a travel boat, you have no room in the port. The lack of space at the port can hamper potential buyers. The resale of your sailboat (for those who have not chosen the long-term sailboat rental) involves its share of uncertainty: evolution of the market price, cost of the port, maintenance and insurance costs while you NOT use the boat. In short, as long as the sailboat is not sold, you are not at ease!
While with long-term rental, you return the boat on the scheduled date and after the end-of-rental formalities you set off with a free spirit and can move on to another project without being in charge of a sailboat that you no longer use.
On the financial side, those who opt for long-term rental know in advance the cost of the operation while with the purchase / resale, not only a large sum of money is mobilized during the trip but in addition the difference between the purchase price and the resale price is not easily predictable. A boat less than 3 years old easily loses 10% of its value in a year. On a sailboat of € 500,000, this represents a loss of € 50,000. This amount is to be compared with the cost of a long-term rental!
